Slumdog Millionaire: A Rags-to-Riches Story of Love and Survival
Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British drama film that tells the story of Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who becomes a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and surprises everyone by answering every question correctly. Plot Summary
The film begins with Jamal being interrogated and tortured by the police, who suspect him of cheating on the game show. Jamal and his older brother Salim grew up in the slums of Mumbai, where they witnessed the massacre of their mother during a Hindu-Muslim riot. They befriended a young girl named Latika, who became Jamal's love interest. The three children were taken in by a gangster named Maman, who exploited them as beggars and tried to force them into prostitution. Jamal and Salim managed to escape, but left Latika behind.
Over the years, Jamal and Salim had different paths in life. Jamal worked as a chaiwala (tea server) at a call center, while Salim became a ruthless criminal working for another gangster named Javed. Jamal never gave up on finding Latika, who was eventually rescued by Salim but then sold to Javed as his mistress. Jamal decided to participate in the game show as a way to contact Latika, hoping that she would watch him on TV. He also hoped to win enough money to free her from Javed.
On the show, Jamal amazed the host Prem Kumar and the audience with his knowledge and luck. He answered questions related to his personal experiences, such as the name of a Bollywood star he met as a child (Amitabh Bachchan), the motto of a Hindu god he prayed to for help (Rama), the inventor of the revolver he used to scare off Maman (Samuel Colt), the name of an American president whose picture he saw at the Taj Mahal (Benjamin Franklin), and the location of Cambridge Circus in London he learned from a British tourist he helped (at the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road). He also answered questions related to his general education, such as the meaning of a Hindi word he learned from a book (Arthashastra), the name of a famous poet he read at school (Rabindranath Tagore), and the smallest planet in the solar system he learned from an astronomy book (Mercury).
After answering the penultimate question worth 10 million rupees, Jamal was arrested by the police on suspicion of cheating. He explained his story to a sympathetic inspector, who believed him and let him return to the show for the final question worth 20 million rupees. The question was about the third musketeer in Alexandre Dumas' novel, which Jamal did not know. He decided to use his last lifeline: phone a friend. He called Salim's cell phone number, hoping that Latika would answer. She did, but she did not know the answer either. Jamal decided to guess: Aramis. He was right.
Jamal won the grand prize and was reunited with Latika at a train station, where they shared their first kiss. Salim sacrificed himself to help them escape from Javed's men by shooting Javed and then getting shot himself. The film ends with Jamal and Latika dancing together during the end credits.
